Gerrit Rietveld, the chief Dutch architect-modernist, built this house for the widow of Tries Schroeder and her three children, but in the course of construction, he became so friends with the customer that he settled with her in the house and lived there all his life.

It is believed that in this project, Rietveld transferred to the three-dimensional space the principles of abstract painting by Pete Mondrian. Even more than Mondrian's paintings, but not at all, it's for "normal" modernist houses: there are too many colors in it, too many details not due to the function. Nevertheless, he is their predecessor. The Schroeder House is one of the earliest bold experiments on the basis of which the architecture of modernism has developed.
